2022 A FASHIONABLE REPORTAGE.

Melbourne Fashion Festival

In 2022, we are starting a conversation around how clothing impacts us, exploring the effect on individuals, communities, our mental health, and the planet. Why? We want to build a community of like-minded individuals who love clothes but are interested in being socially and environmentally aware. We want clothing to make a positive impact on our lives, but not at the cost of other people or the planet. We also believe that investigating our relationship with clothes, may hold keys to not only how we feel about ourselves and connect with others in our community, but also how and how much we consume.

OVERARCHING IDEA

To capture street style in a modern way and allow for more inclusivity in capture by presenting a photo booth opportunity for people who want to contribute to the conversation.

COMPONENT 1 - MODERN STREET STLYLE

In our opinion gone are the days of more is more. Even if you post on social every day of the year, you’d only require 365 images. Given that content is generally split across multiple visual categories we think less is a better approach.

We propose 80-120 MORE PERFECT, MORE INTERESTING, MORE EDITORIAL, MORE STORYTELLING assets. (*Allowing for approx. 10 posts a month.)

We want to capture a reportage of the fashion community attending MFF, highlighting individuals who express who they are through the way they dress.

COMPONENT 2- PHOTOBOOTH + SURVEY

In street style documentation, the photographer is also the observer and critic. We choose people based on what we think, so inevitably miss the opportunity to be 100% inclusive.

In line with our intention to actively seek and develop a more inclusive approach to shooting street style, we’d like to propose a photo booth idea that allows anyone who loves their outfit to be featured in a street style moment.

Shot by the Street Smith Agency team of a photographer and assistant. Simple full-length street style portraits would be taken in the same location, creating a portfolio of people in a visual story that collectively show our similarities and our differences. From who we are, to how we dress, we can organise portraits based on identity, colour stories, trends - think curly mullets.

Each person will have a 2-minute portrait window (approx. 5-10 images captured). This will allow for photographing as many people as we can to create a snapshot of the broader community attending. Our hope is to photograph between 50-150 attending per evening, depending on multiple variables.

People can be shot as individuals or couples, though no group bigger than two.

One image will be delivered immediately to each person via AirDrop.

*Exact aesthetic TBC.

Q&A QUESTIONS + RESULTS

This will include:

  • 3-5 general short-form questions (e.g. multiple choice), that will give a percentage answer. For example. “Do you prefer new clothes or clothes that are worn well?”

  • 3-5 long-form question options. Each person chooses one to answer, which allows them to provide a longer answer. From these answers, we’ll choose the top 5 quotes per question to share with MFF, with matching images of that person.

We will also have general demographic questions relating to age, identity, location (postcode).

*Please note full results including but not limited to any contact information and further answers will not be shared or made available.

OPTIONS FOR INCLUSION THAT WILL INFORM THE QUOTE

  1. 80-100 Modern street style images shot across the 5 days.

  2. Photobooth & Research Q&A specifically designed with MFF in mind. With a refined outcome of statistics, as well as personal statements supplied by individuals. Please see our current surveys for example. Q&A 1 - Q&A 2.

  3. Anecdotes - each image is taken at a moment is time or for a reason specifically of value to Liz. We’d like to offer the option of anecdote by Liz for each image as to what happened in that moment and why is was special, allowing for content to continue the story well after the festival has passed.

WHO ARE WE

In 2022 we are redefining who we are. If you’re interested in understanding more, read more about it here.

CONSIDERATIONS

As part of our privacy policy, we have vowed to protect the participants in our research by not sharing or selling their information to third parties. Please note this will disallow the sharing of this information in part or in full with festival partners, including but not limited to PayPal.

Looking for our similarities and differences, this year we would like to ensure we are able to photograph a diverse mix of people.

The physicality of the photo booth, where this sits within Fed Square, how we let people know we’re that it’s a street style moment for everyone.
